Highlights:
This tour gives you plenty of time to explore the walled city of Famagusta, home to 365 churches of many different religions, and numerous other historical landmarks. The world heritage and EU are now investing to restore most of the buildings back to their original condition. Red Bus will provide you with our own map to navigate through this beautiful time locked city. If looking at the history isn’t your interest, there’s enough time for you to visit the unique shops or restaurants. Traditional Turkish products can be found here as well as handbags, clothes or replica football kits. Credit cards and any type of currency can be used on the northern side of the island even though the Turkish Lira is the national currency. Photography is permitted within and around the Walled City.
Next we take a short journey from Famagusta to the beach where you get to see Varosha, which was once the most popular holiday destinations but has been deserted since 1974. This beach is nearest and best location to witness the sadness and devastation of this resort which was once the playground for the rich and famous. Our Guide will take you onto the beach and give you a short presentation of the background to this resort. Now that the fence has been taken down you will be able to walk down along the beach closer to the main centre of the deserted resort. You can also take this opportunity to swim in the tranquil waters of the Mediterranean where the most beautiful beaches are located. Turtles are occasionally spotted in this area. There is also a beach snack bar and our Guide will spend time on the beach to answer any questions. We recommend you bring a towel and swimwear.
