Cyprus is an excellent place for certified and experienced divers to scuba dive and has numerous sites with great visibility, interesting underwater features and marine life. As well as the local shore dives there are 2 wreck dives locally - The Nemesis III and Liberty wrecks which were purposefully sunk just off the coast to provide diving opportunities and a rich habitat for sealife.
Available from may to October, weather permitting. please book at least 5 days in advance.
Highlights:
Liberty Wreck
The Liberty was an old Russian cargo boat which was stripped down and sunk just off the Protaras coast in 2009. It sits in 27 metres of water making it an ideal diving location for certified divers and as a first wreck dive for newly qualified divers. This artificial reef has provided a wonderful habitat for marine life and within days of being sunk fish had started to appear and squid eggs were laid at the site. The Liberty Wreck is 37m long and 8m wide and sits upright on the seabed. The Liberty has 2 easy swim throughs entering and exiting the wreck through the cargo doors.
Nemesis Wreck
The Nemesis III sits in 24 metres of water. It is 25 metres long and 6 metres wide and was sunk here in 2013. As with the Liberty, many species of marine life have made their home here including squid, moray eels, a shoal of amber jacks, and plenty of other fish species. Before dinking, this ship had many holes cut in it to enable more swim through routes and more habitats for marine life.
Both wrecks are located about 1km from the shore so boats are used for access with ladders from the boat to the sea. There is just a 5 minute swim between the two so both can easily be visited during one trip.
