The Zenobia wreck dive is one of the best in the world due to it's size, depth, visibility and the water conditions. The vessel is a 172m long Swedish ferry boat that sank in 1980 on her maiden voyage due to technical problems that affected its stability. The boat was loaded with over 100 trucks and trailers, The wreck is lying between 42m and 16m. Many of the trucks are visible either lying on the seabed or still inside the vessel. The wreck lies just a few minutes boat journey from the shore near Larnaca. Because of it's size we usually do two dives on each trip.
Before diving the Zenobia wreck, divers must complete a check dive locally with our dive master. This dive package includes a local check dive and 2 dives at the Zenobia wreck site (on the same day) All equipment is provided as well as transport from Ayia Napa/Protaras to Larnaca harbour and back. Diving is from a boat and refreshments are served on board.
The Zenobia Wreck is a unique diving experience for certified divers. There's nothing like it anywhere else in the world. In 1980 the Zenobia was on her maiden voyage from Sweden to Syria loaded with agricultural machinery.
On route she experienced steering issues caused by the electronic ballast system, the mechanics worked on the issue believing it was fixed but as the Zenobia reached a routine stop in Larnaca the fault reoccurred. The ship began to list to 45 degrees so the decision was made to to tow the vessel out of the harbour. She was towed just 1500M out of Larnaca harbor and on the 5th of June the captain made the decision to remove all crew from the Vessel. In the early hours of 7th of June 1980 the Zenobia capsized taking her estimated £200 million worth of cargo down with her to the seabed.
MV Zenobia now lies on her port side on the seabed at 42M. This epic wreck offers something for all levels of divers from novice wreck divers who can comfortably explore the shallower external parts of the wreck. To seasoned wreck and technical divers who will be spoilt for places to explore on this iconic dive.
