Fikardou village is owned by the department of antiquities and is a candidate for UNESCO world heritage status. It's a truly authentic Cypriot village, with traditional stone architecture. Some houses here are hundreds of years old. Some have been turned into mini museums where you can step back in time and imagine life in ancient times.
Fikardou is located on the slopes of the Troodos mountains in the Pitsilia area, around 38km south west of Nicosia.
We also visit Machairas Monastery, which dates back to the 12th century. Along with the monasteries at Kykkos and Agiou Neophytou, Machairas is one of the three "royal" monasteries of the Byzantine era. The current building has been in place since 1892 after a huge fire destroyed the previous medieval monastery. It was reconstructed using donations from the Russian Empire.
Next to the monastery is a museum dedicated to Grigoris Afxentiou, who was the most famous freedom fighter against British rule.
