Kourion was once one of the most important cities in Cyprus and is believed to date back to the Neolithic period. Most of the archaeological remains here date back to the Roman and Byzantine periods. The site contains an amphitheatre, well preserved mosaics, bathhouses and numerous other buildings. The site was completely abandoned by 670 AD. Kourion sits on an elevated site with panoramic views over the beach and fields below.
The Sanctuary of Apollo is just a few kilometres from Kourion and was dedicated to the worship of Apollo Hylates. There are numerous historical remains at this tranquil site which are worth exploring.
